Tokeneke Earth Week 2013

Tokeneke Earth Week 2013

Monday, April 22nd marks the beginning of Earth Week in Darien.  To help celebrate, Tokeneke will be completing different events and activities to help remind its students and faculty ways in which we can help take care of our earth.  The schedule of events is as follows:

Monday - Earth Day Kick of Assembly for students and faculty

Tuesday  - Trash the Trash Tuesday:  Students are asked to use reusable containers like canvas bags and Rubbermaid containers for lunch and snack.  Teachers are being asked to avoid projects or assignments that create waste or garbage.  There will be recycling in the cafeteria during lunch periods.

Wednesday - Wireless Wednesday:  Students and teachers are being asked to conserve energy by avoiding use of electronics and turning off the lights.

Thursday - Thirsty Thursday: Students are encouraged to bring in reusable water bottles and thermoses in place of plastic water bottles, Capri Suns, or other plastic drink containers.

Friday - Fresh Start Friday:  All students and faculty members will make a pledge to have a "Fresh Start to Being Green."  Think of something that you could change to help the environment.

There will be a few events that will last throughout the week:

Bag your Bag - Students can bring in any plastic bags to be recycled in the Great Hall.

Reusable Bag Contest - Students will have the ability to design a reusable bag for Tokeneke.  Contest will be introduced on Monday 4/22 and designs will be due Friday 4/26th.

Announcements -  every morning during the announcements, students will hear a fact about recycling or an idea that can help encourage students to go green!

Happy Earth Week!

Royle Garden Plans for Earth Week 2013

During the monday of Earth week, the Garden would like to have a planting station set up outside during recess, at which the children may make recycle newspaper pots, fill them w/ soil, and plant a vegetable seed, to sprout in shelf bins along the sunny windowsills of the cafe and southern exposure stair wells.  Anouk has undertaken creation of a garden wall display for the front hall, which will be put up prior to break friday after school, or first thing monday morning upon our return to school, post break.
The classes have all been provided with classroom planting kits, and requested seeds, so that they may proceed as their lessons and schedules allow.  Garden parents are ready to help out with this at individual teachers' request.

Thank you to Catherine Gedney for the update!

Holmes Earth week 2013

Holmes will be doing the 1st grade DEG presentation that week.  In addition, we will will be launching Single Stream throughout the school, piggybacking on the town-wide launch by the Transfer Station Committee around that same time.  Teachers and librarians will be asked to feature/use eco-themed books that week during story time.  We will also be introducing a "no idling zone" at pick up time.

Each student and staff member will be asked to make an "Earth Day Resolution".  Students will fill out a sheet with their resolution on it and perhaps draw a picture.  Some or all of these will be posted around school.  We are also considering a class, grade, school-wide resolution.

Thank you to Sue Flaherty for the update!

Simple Green Tips

Earth Day Again? 12 Easy Ways for Busy Families to Go Green

Who has time for Earth Day? You do. Here's how.

Make Every Day Earth Day!
Here's how to make every day Earth Day!
No Time for Earth Day? 12 Easy Ways for Busy Families to Go Green
In theory, it’s such a great idea, isn’t it: Loving the Earth, recycling, reusing, planting trees, growing our own food, respecting the environment, using the right light bulbs, teaching our children and grandchildren all the ways to save the Earth. Like so many great ideas, doing all kinds of cool, Earth-saving things on Earth Day seems like the best idea ever in, say, October, when it’s far enough away to seem possible.
But here we are in April and while, like you, I meant to get all those energy-saving light bulbs, solar panels, water-saving devices and to plant that year-round, grow-your-own vegetable-herb garden of Eden, well, it didn’t happen.

In the name of busy women everywhere who would love to save the Earth but just don’t have time, I offer this list of tips, resources and ideas all in one place. If you want to do something on Earth Day, here’s a one-stop-shopping list of lots of great ideas.
What is Earth Day, anyway?
Instead of giving up on going green, here are 12 reasonable, possible, doable tips, ideas and resources you can use with your family to help save the environment and its inhabitants. We can’t all have a compost station out back and only eat what we grow or kill ourselves. But we actually do lots of small things, make small changes in our daily habits that will make a big difference in the external environment—and set a good example for our kids and grandchildren about how to be good stewards of our Earth.
How to go green
Make it a family project: Like with any life change, we need to rally our troops. For example, when we’re trying to quit a bad habit or start a new good one, experts tell us to share the news so everyone around us is supportive and doesn’t derail our efforts. Going green is the same, only it’s a goal we set for the whole family, not just for mom! Get everyone involved and invested. Make it a game, create a competition, have rewards, set goals, tie it to family time. Do whatever you need to make it fun. Maybe every person in the family picks one way to go green, or maybe the whole family works on one project together.
Start simple with 50 simple things:
First, check out John Javna and his daughter, Sophie’s bestseller The New 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth. It’s a revised version of Javna’s self-published best-selling book that gave us all specific, concrete and easy ways for families to help the environment. Here’s a great piece in the Huffington Post by the Javna family explaining their organization, EarthWorks, and their highly readable website:50simplethings.com, which is full of excellent tips and big ideas on how we can all do even more – and why we must.
He offers realistic options that aren’t overwhelming. His philosophy: "Pick something you really care about that's going to make a lot of sense," he said. "Look for things that don't totally disrupt your life, that are going to have long-term consequences."

Green Schools Alliance

At our meeting that never was I was hoping to get feedback from you all to see if you thought your school would be interested in joining the  Green Schools Alliance.
They have a "tool kit" with things to do to green your school and a way of reporting and involving your school in a national effort complete with motivating competitions.
Check it out and let me know what you think. It might be a simple way to handle Earth Week 2013.
