Tokeneke Earth Week 2013

Tokeneke Earth Week 2013

Monday, April 22nd marks the beginning of Earth Week in Darien.  To help celebrate, Tokeneke will be completing different events and activities to help remind its students and faculty ways in which we can help take care of our earth.  The schedule of events is as follows:

Monday - Earth Day Kick of Assembly for students and faculty

Tuesday  - Trash the Trash Tuesday:  Students are asked to use reusable containers like canvas bags and Rubbermaid containers for lunch and snack.  Teachers are being asked to avoid projects or assignments that create waste or garbage.  There will be recycling in the cafeteria during lunch periods.

Wednesday - Wireless Wednesday:  Students and teachers are being asked to conserve energy by avoiding use of electronics and turning off the lights.

Thursday - Thirsty Thursday: Students are encouraged to bring in reusable water bottles and thermoses in place of plastic water bottles, Capri Suns, or other plastic drink containers.

Friday - Fresh Start Friday:  All students and faculty members will make a pledge to have a "Fresh Start to Being Green."  Think of something that you could change to help the environment.

There will be a few events that will last throughout the week:

Bag your Bag - Students can bring in any plastic bags to be recycled in the Great Hall.

Reusable Bag Contest - Students will have the ability to design a reusable bag for Tokeneke.  Contest will be introduced on Monday 4/22 and designs will be due Friday 4/26th.

Announcements -  every morning during the announcements, students will hear a fact about recycling or an idea that can help encourage students to go green!

Happy Earth Week!

Royle Garden Plans for Earth Week 2013

During the monday of Earth week, the Garden would like to have a planting station set up outside during recess, at which the children may make recycle newspaper pots, fill them w/ soil, and plant a vegetable seed, to sprout in shelf bins along the sunny windowsills of the cafe and southern exposure stair wells.  Anouk has undertaken creation of a garden wall display for the front hall, which will be put up prior to break friday after school, or first thing monday morning upon our return to school, post break.
The classes have all been provided with classroom planting kits, and requested seeds, so that they may proceed as their lessons and schedules allow.  Garden parents are ready to help out with this at individual teachers' request.

Thank you to Catherine Gedney for the update!

Holmes Earth week 2013

Holmes will be doing the 1st grade DEG presentation that week.  In addition, we will will be launching Single Stream throughout the school, piggybacking on the town-wide launch by the Transfer Station Committee around that same time.  Teachers and librarians will be asked to feature/use eco-themed books that week during story time.  We will also be introducing a "no idling zone" at pick up time.

Each student and staff member will be asked to make an "Earth Day Resolution".  Students will fill out a sheet with their resolution on it and perhaps draw a picture.  Some or all of these will be posted around school.  We are also considering a class, grade, school-wide resolution.

Thank you to Sue Flaherty for the update!
